Why Walls Matter in GunZ: The Duel
Why Walls Matter in GunZ: The Duel
In most shooters, walls are obstacles. In GunZ: The Duel, every wall is a movement tool. Vertical control separates average players from strong ones. High ground gives you better angles, safer reloads, stronger openers, and the ability to disengage instantly.
Classic maps like Town, Mansion and Dungeon were designed (and later mastered by the community) around wall routes. Learning to use walls properly changes how you see every fight.
The Three Core Wall Techniques
1. Wall Run
Dash toward a wall at a slight angle (roughly 15–45 degrees) and hold the movement key along the wall. You will run horizontally across the surface.
This is the basic way to travel quickly and change elevation without losing speed.
2. Wall Climb
Run straight into a wall and jump. With enough momentum you will climb upward. Without cancels, the height is limited - this is where Wall Cancel becomes essential.
3. Wall Cancel (The Real Skill)
While climbing or running on a wall, cancel the animation with a slash and immediately re-engage the wall. This resets your climb momentum and lets you gain far more height than a normal jump or climb allows.
Done repeatedly, you can climb almost any building face and reach rooftops that normal players cannot access cleanly.
How to Practice Wall Cancel Correctly
- Create a private room on Town (the best classroom map).
- Pick one building face and climb it cleanly five times in a row.
- Focus on the timing of the slash cancel - too early or too late and you fall off.
- Once you can climb one wall consistently, move to racing yourself around the entire map while touching every major rooftop.
The goal is to make wall movement feel as natural as ground Butterfly. When you no longer think about the inputs, your duels change permanently.
How Vertical Movement Wins Fights
- Escapes – Breaking line of sight upward is one of the fastest and safest ways to disengage in the game.
- High-ground openers – Dropping onto an enemy from a rooftop with a Slash Shot is a classic and extremely strong first move.
- Angle control – From above you can shoot while the opponent has a much harder time hitting you cleanly.
- Quest / PvE – Many monster waves become significantly easier when you hold high ground that the AI pathing struggles with.
Advanced Wall Concepts
- Wall Drop + Slash Shot – Climb, cancel, then drop while performing a Slash Shot for a sudden high-damage entry.
- Rebounding between walls – In narrow alleys or indoor areas you can bounce between two walls to stay airborne longer.
- Combining with Butterfly – Good players Butterfly on the ground, then transition seamlessly into wall movement without losing rhythm.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to climb without enough forward momentum
- Slashing too early or too late during the cancel
- Looking down while climbing (keep your camera relatively level)
- Only practicing on flat walls - learn irregular surfaces and corners too
Recommended Practice Routine
- 10 minutes – Clean single-wall climbs on Town buildings
- 10 minutes – Full map rooftop circuit (touch every major roof)
- 10 minutes – Wall Drop + Slash Shot practice
- 5–10 minutes – Combining Butterfly on the ground with wall transitions
Record yourself from time to time. Watching the replay makes timing errors obvious very quickly.
Final Advice
Ground K-Style (Butterfly + Slash Shot) is the foundation. Vertical movement is the next layer that turns good players into dangerous ones. Once walls become part of your natural movement, maps stop feeling flat and start feeling three-dimensional.
Master the cancel. Own the rooftops. Control the high ground.
This is how real GunZ: The Duel is played.
