What is K-Style in GunZ: The Duel?
K-Style (Korean Style) is the community-created movement and combat system that turned GunZ: The Duel from a regular third-person shooter into a high-skill aerial combat game. It is based on cancelling sword animations into other actions - dashes, blocks, weapon swaps and shots - allowing players to stay mobile, block while airborne, and deal damage in ways the original developers never intended.
The 2026 Steam remaster deliberately preserved classic K-Style timings. Everything you learn here works on the official servers.
Correct Learning Order (Do Not Skip Steps)
- Dash - Your new default movement
- Butterfly - The foundation of everything
- Slash Shot - Where the damage comes from
- Wall Cancel & Climbing - Vertical control
- Advanced techniques (Half Step, Late Dash, etc.)
Most new players fail because they try to learn everything at once. Master each step until it is muscle memory before moving to the next.
1. Dash - The Base of All Movement
With a sword equipped, double-tap any direction (W, A, S, D). This is faster and more controllable than walking. In real fights you should almost never walk - you dash.
Practice: Empty room → only dash around the map for 10-15 minutes. Make it feel natural.
2. Butterfly - The Most Important Technique
The Butterfly is a continuous loop that keeps you mobile in the air while your block is active for a moment every cycle.
Basic input (with sword):
- Jump
- Slash (left click)
- Block (Shift or your rebound key)
- Re-jump the moment you touch the ground
- Repeat
Common mistakes:
- Mashing the buttons instead of keeping a steady rhythm
- Blocking too early (the block comes slightly after the slash starts)
- Forgetting to re-jump on landing
Drills:
- Stationary Butterfly on flat ground - 5 minutes until the rhythm is even
- Butterfly while moving forward
- Butterfly around pillars and along walls
- Butterfly while a friend shoots slow shots at you (learn to trade)
Once Butterfly is automatic, you are officially playing K-Style.
3. Slash Shot - The Damage Engine
A Slash Shot cancels a sword slash into an instant weapon swap and shot (almost always a shotgun). This lets you fire during movement animations that would normally lock you.
Basic chain: Slash → Swap to shotgun → Fire (all in one fluid motion, usually mid-air inside a Butterfly).
The classic competitive loadout is Double Shotgun + Sword. You alternate the two shotguns through Slash Shots so one is always ready while the other reloads.
Learning path:
- Stationary Slash Shot on the ground
- Slash Shot while jumping
- Slash Shot inside a Butterfly loop
- Full Butterfly + Slash Shot movement
4. Wall Techniques
- Wall Run - Dash toward a wall at an angle and hold movement along it
- Wall Climb - Run straight up a surface
- Wall Cancel - Cancel the climb with a slash and re-engage the wall to gain extra height
High ground is extremely strong in GunZ. Learning to climb and drop onto enemies with a Slash Shot is a classic and deadly opener.
Best practice map: Town. Climb every building face cleanly, then race yourself around the rooftops.
Recommended Keybinds for K-Style
- Block on a mouse side button or a key your fingers already rest near (most important rebind)
- Weapon swaps on easy-to-reach keys (not the number row if possible)
- Keep classic double-tap Dash until you are fully fluent
There is no single “correct” layout - hand size and mouse buttons differ. Change one bind at a time and test with Butterfly drills.
Practice Routine That Actually Works
- Create a private room on Town
- 10 minutes pure Butterfly (stationary → moving)
- 10 minutes Slash Shot (stationary → inside Butterfly)
- 10 minutes Wall Cancel practice
- Only then go into real rooms
Record yourself. Watch your hands. Most early failures are timing, not the wrong keys.
Final Advice
K-Style is a rhythm and timing game more than a pure aim game. The players who look untouchable are not magically better - they have simply drilled the same loops for hundreds of hours until the inputs disappeared into muscle memory.
Master the Butterfly. Add Slash Shot. Take the walls. Everything else will follow.
Welcome to real GunZ: The Duel.
