Why Slash Shot is Everything

Why Slash Shot is Everything

In GunZ: The Duel, pure shooting is weak. The real damage engine is the Slash Shot - cancelling a sword slash into an instant weapon swap and shot. This technique lets you fire shotguns during movement animations that would normally lock you in place.

Combined with the Butterfly, Slash Shot turns you from a moving target into a constant threat. This is why shotguns have dominated the meta for over 20 years.

Basic Slash Shot

Core input (with sword equipped):

  • Slash (left click)
  • Immediately swap to your shotgun
  • Fire

The entire chain must feel like one fluid motion. Most players fail at the beginning because the cancel window is tight and rhythm-based.

Correct learning path:

  1. Stationary Slash Shot on the ground (no jumping)
  2. Slash Shot while jumping
  3. Slash Shot inside a Butterfly loop
  4. Full movement + Butterfly + Slash Shot

Do not skip steps. Master the stationary version first.

Double Shotgun – The Classic Competitive Loadout

The strongest and most popular duel set in GunZ: The Duel history is:

  • Shotgun 1
  • Shotgun 2
  • Sword

You alternate between the two shotguns through Slash Shots. While one is “reloading”, you are already firing the other out of a cancel. This almost completely removes reload downtime and gives you the highest practical DPS in the game.

How the loop works:

  1. Butterfly
  2. Slash → Swap to Shotgun 1 → Fire
  3. Continue Butterfly
  4. Slash → Swap to Shotgun 2 → Fire
  5. Repeat

When done correctly it looks and feels like continuous pressure.

Common Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

  • Firing too late – The shot must come out of the cancel window. If you wait even a fraction too long, the animation locks and the shot is delayed.
  • Swapping too early – The slash must start before the swap. If you swap first, you lose the cancel.
  • Breaking the Butterfly rhythm – Many players pause their Butterfly to do a Slash Shot. The goal is to weave the Slash Shot inside the Butterfly without stopping the loop.
  • Using only one shotgun – Single shotgun forces you to wait for reloads. Double Shotgun is the real competitive standard.

Advanced Tips for Higher Level Play

  • Practice the cancel while moving sideways and backward, not only forward.
  • Learn to Slash Shot immediately after a wall cancel or wall drop for deadly high-ground openers.
  • In close range, a well-timed Slash Shot after a block or massive can end the fight instantly.
  • Keep your camera control smooth. If your aim drifts during the Butterfly + Slash Shot loop, lower your sensitivity slightly and rebuild the muscle memory.

Recommended Practice Routine

  1. Create a private room on Town or any open map.
  2. 10 minutes – Stationary Slash Shot (left and right sides).
  3. 10 minutes – Slash Shot while jumping and moving.
  4. 15 minutes – Full Butterfly + Double Shotgun alternation.
  5. Only after the rhythm feels automatic – go into real duel rooms.

Record your practice sessions. Watching your own hands is one of the fastest ways to fix timing issues.

Loadout Notes

  • Best overall: Double Shotgun + Sword
  • Good alternative while learning: Shotgun + Revolver + Sword (easier mid-range poke)
  • Always keep the sword in slot 1 or easily accessible - movement depends on it.

Final Words

Slash Shot is the bridge between “I can Butterfly” and “I can actually win duels”. Once the cancel becomes automatic, your damage output jumps dramatically and opponents who only know basic movement will start struggling against you.

Master the rhythm. Alternate the shotguns. Never stop the Butterfly.

This is the heart of GunZ: The Duel combat.
